Cooperative Education

Cooperative Education is off to another great year at Garth Webb Secondary School!

Our students are gaining a variety of experiences in areas such as automobile sales, graphic design, veterinary medicine, elementary education, acting and film production, child care and automobile service, just to name a few.  Click on the link for a wide range of companies who have supported our Co-op program to-date.  Co-op Employers

Co-op allows students to test-drive a career while gaining hands-on experience and developing employability and leadership skills.  Students can explore their interests and abilities in order to make more informed post-secondary pathway decisions.

How does the program work?
  • Students select Co-op on their option sheet
  • They will then complete an online application sent to them by the Co-op teacher
  • Co-op teacher meets with the student, works with them to determine interests and placement options and to find an appropriate placement
  • Students are timetabled for a two period block as they are earning two credits
  • They spend the first two weeks of the semester completing preplacement work which will prepare them for their work experience
  • They complete an interview with the potential placement supervisor
  •  If successful, they begin their placement and work 2.5 to 3 hours hours every day (either morning or afternoon) in order to meet the key learnings, goals and course connections as set out on their Learning Plan
  •  Students meet as a class once a month in order to reflect on their experiences and complete integration material
On-line Research Co-op
  • Allows students in grade 12 the opportunity to work with a leading researcher in a field of interest to the student
  • Students are timetabled for one period
  • Students need to apply for this program and get two teacher references
